Synthesis of Nafion~-stabilized Pt nanoparticles to improve the durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Nafion-stabilizedPtnanoparticlecolloidalsolutionissynthesizedthroughethyleneglycolreduction.Pt/Nafionaddedwithcarbonblackaselectricconductionmaterial(labeledPt/Nafion-XC72)showsexcellentelectrochemicalpropertycomparedwithPt/C.Aftera300-cycledischargingdurabilitytest,thecellperformanceofmembraneelectrodeassembly(MEA)withthePt/Nafion-XC72andPt/Ccatalystsindicatesa29.9%and92.2%decrease,respectively.ThechargetransferresistancesofPt/Nafion-XC72andPt/Cincreaseby27.2%and101.9%,respectively.TheremainingelectrochemicallyactivesurfaceareaofPtisabout61.7%inPt/Nafion-XC72andabout38.1%inPt/Cafterthedurabilitytest.TheparticlesizeofPt/Cincreasesfromabout5.1nmtoabout10.8nmbutonlyfrom3.6nmto5.8nminthecaseofPt/Nafion-XC72.ThesedatasuggestthatPt/Nafion-XC72asacatalystcanenhancethedurabilityofPEMFCscomparedwithPt/C.
