EnhancingSchwanncellproliferationmaybebeneficialforperipheralnerverepairandnerveregeneration.AtraditionalherbalformulacomposedofFuling(poriacocos),Baizhu(Atractylodesmacrocephala),andDanggui(Angelicasinensis)(FBD)improvesneuronalsurvivalandgrowth,andFBDmaypromotethesecretionofbrain-derivedneurotrophicfactor.However,themechanismunderlyingSchwanncellproliferationremainsunclear.WetestedwhetherFBDenhancedtheproliferationofhumanSchwanncells.FBD(20μg/mL)increasedSchwanncellviabilityandsurvival,andincreasedthenumberofcellsatG2/MandSphases.FBDalsoincreasednervegrowthfactorandbrain-derivedneurotrophicfactorexpressioninSchwanncells,withmaximumefficacyat20μg/mL.
