Objective:ToelucidatetheroleofS-100Bandneuronspecificenolase(NSE)inpredictingtheoutcomesofpatientswithsevereheadinjury.Methods:Fortypatientswithsevereheadinjurywereincludedinthisstudy.TheserumconcentrationsofS-100BandNSEweremeasuredwithin12hoursafterheadinjurytoinvestigatethecorrelationbetweenserumlevelsofS-100BandNSEandoutcome.ValidityofbothS-100BandNSEinoutcomepredictionwasassessedwithReceiverOperatorCharacteristic(ROC)curve.Results:TheserumconcentrationsofS-100BandNSEofbothgroups,withfavorableorunfavorableoutcomes,weresignificantlyhigherthanthoseofthenormalgroup.Theserumconcentrationswithin12hoursafterheadinjurywerecloselycorrelatedwiththeprognosis.Furthermore,accordingtotheROCcurvesof100BandNSE,S-100BwasfoundbetterinpredictingoutcomesthanNSE.Conclusions:S-100BandNSEmayplayimportantrolesinoutcomepredictionaftersevereheadinjury.Moreover,S-100BisclearlysuperiortoNSEintermsofpredictivevalueandappearstobeamorepromisingserummarkerinoutcomepredictionaftersevereheadinjury.
