HighpopulationgrowthandcontinuedeconomicdevelopmenthavecausedseriousenvironmentaldamageintheAsiaPacificregion.However,therecentexperienceisthatthepaceofenvironmentaldegradationisfasterindevelopingcountriesthanindevelopedcountries.Tothisend,thestudyseekstoassesstheimpactofpopulationpressureonIndia’senvironment,withparticularreferencetothedegradationofnaturalendowmentslikelandandwaterresourcesandtheresultantenvironmentalpollutioninthesixregionsofIndia.Therapideconomicgrowthandexpansionofinfrastructuredevelopmentinrecentdecadeshavenotcomewithoutseriousenvironmentalconsequencesparticularlyinthesouthern,northern,andwesternregions.Butintheeastern,north-eastern,andcentralregionsofthecountry,environmentaldamagehasbeenmainlyduetorapidpopulationgrowth.
