ThemainpurposetodevelopaMapGraphicWorkstationonthewidelyusedmicro-computeristhatbyitthewholeprocessingofmapdatafromcapturing,managing,editing,updatingtographicoutputtingcanberealized.MapDigitizationSystem（MDS）isthesoftwaresystemtodealwiththeinitialandalsothemostimportantprocessing.Inthispaper,theauthorsintroduceaMDSonamicro-computerbasedMapGrphicWorkstationthathasbeenqualitifiedfortheproducationofdigitalmap.SincethesystemisdesignedtotallyindependentlyandinthegeneralframeoftheMapGraphicWorkstation,thecapturingandman-agingandotherprocessingsformapdataareinanintegralmanner,inwhichtheproducationofdigitalmapcanbefulfilledconveniently.Atthesametime,thesystemisflexibleforfunctionextensionandwidelyapplicabletothedatafromdif-ferentsourcesandwithdifferentinformationcharacterisitcs(e.g.,theprocessingofChinesecharactersonmap).
