简介:Populationgrowthanddevelopmentpatternshaveasignificantimpactontheenvironmentalperformance.Theissueofconcerniswhetherpopulationgrowthortheconsumption/productionpatternsareresponsibleforenvironmentaldeterioration.Thispaperisanattempttocapturetheimpactoftechnologicaldevelopment,affluence,andpopulationonenvironmentalperformanceindex,whilepreviousstutheshadcapturedtheimpactofthesethreefactorsonenvironmentonlythroughCO2emissions.Theanalysisrevealsthattechnologicaldevelopmentandpopulationsizehaveanegativeimpactonenvironmentalperformance,whereasmeasurestoimproveaffluencehaveapositiveimpact.Technologicaldevelopmenthasincreasedtheproductionofenergyefficientproductsbutatthesametimeconsumptionoftheseproductshasincreasedmanifoldleadingtoenvironmentaldeterioration.Demographicattributesneedspecificattentiontoimproveenvironmentalperformance.Thispaperconcludesonsomepolicyreflectionsonslowingthepopulationgrowthaswellaspersuadesindividualsandeconomiestorelooktotheirconsumptionandproductionpatternsandchannelizetheireffortstoprotecttheenvironment.
