摘要
Opticalmicrocavitieshaveattractedtremendousinterestinbothfundamentalandappliedresearchinthepastfewdecades,thankstotheirsmallfootprint,easyintegrability,andhighqualityfactors.Usingtotalinternalreflectionfromadielectricinterfaceoraphotonicbandgapinaperiodicsystem,thesephotonicstructuresdonotrelyonconventionalmetal-coatedmirrorstoconfinelightinsmallvolumes,whichhavebroughtforthnewdevelopmentsinbothclassicalandquantumoptics.Thisfocusissueshowcasesseveralsuchdevelopmentsandrelatedfindings,whichmaypavethewayforthenextgenerationofon-chipphotonicdevicesbasedonmicrocavities.
