摘要
UnderstandinghowtheInternetisusedbyHEPiscriticaltooptimizingtheperformanceoftheinter-labcomputingenvironment.Typicallyuserequirementshavebeendefinedbydiscussionsbetweencollaborators.However,lateranalysisoftheactualtraffichasshownthisisoftenmisunderstoodandactualuseissignificantlydifferenttothatpredicted.Passivemonitoringoftherealtrafficprovidesinsightintothetruecommunicationsrequirementsandtheperformanceofalargenumberofalargenumberofinter-communicatingnodes.ItmaybeusefulinidentifyingperformanceproblemsthatareduetofactorsotherthanInternetcongestionespeciallywhencomparedtoothermethodssuchasactivemonitoringwheretrafficisgeneratedspecificallytomeasureitsperformance.Controlledactivemonitoringbetweendedicatedserversoftengivesanindicationofwhatcanbeachievedonanetwork,Passivemonitoringoftherealtrafficgivesapictureofthetrueperformance.ThispaperwilldiscussthemethodandresultsofcollectingandanalyzingflowsofdataobtainedfromtheSLACInternetborder,TheuniquenatureofHEPtrafficandtheneedsoftheHEPcommunitywillbehighlighted.Theinsightsthishasbroughttounderstandingthenetworkwillbereviewedandthebenefitiscanbringtoengineeringnetworkswillbediscussed.
