Experimental study on glass-ceramics preparation from hot steel slag

摘要 Whenliquidsteelslagproducedfromsteelmakingprocesswastreatedintothepost-coldslagbyconventionalmethods,thegreatdealofslagheatwasdissipatedintotheenvironment,causingalotofenergywasteandenvironmentalpollution.Inthisstudy,anovelapproachofdirectutilizationofhotsteelslagasarawmaterialandslagheatfortheproductionofglass-ceramicswasproposedandexperimentallytested.Inordertosimulateliquidslagfromsteelmakingelectricfurnace,40%water-quenchedslagwasremeltedat1450℃andthenmixedwith60%meltingadditives(silicapowder,aluminapowderandsodiumoxide,etc.)andsubsequentlymeltedtogetherat1500℃for1hintomodifiedliquidslagwhichwascast,heat-treated,annealedandtransformedintoglass-ceramics.Theheat-treatedglasssampleswereinvestigatedusingdifferentialthermalanalysis(DTA),X-raydiffraction(XRD),andscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM).Theresultsshowthatdominantcrystallinephaseisdiopside[CaFe(SiO3)2]andtheshapeofthecrystalislikethegranule,diameterisabout0.2-0.6μm.Aglass-ceramicwithnucleationtemperatureof695℃fortwohoursandcrystallizationtemperatureof893℃foronehourand1163℃forhalf-hourexhibitedthebestcombinationofproperties.Thismethodofslagmixedwithmeltingadditivestoadjustthecompositionoftheparentglassisimportantfortheindustrialproductionofglass-ceramicsbydirectutilizationofhotsteelslag.
