BadischeStahlwerkeinKehl,GermanyislocatedontheriverRhineclosetotheBlackForrest,whichisarecreationalarea.AsaconsequencetheenvironmentalregulationsforBadischeStahlwerkeareevenmorestringentthanthealreadystringentGermanregulations.BadischeStahlwerkeelaboratedovertheyearsmanyconceptsforthereductionofenvironmentalimpactbyasteelplant.Theseconceptsdealwiththereductionofemissionstoairwaterandsoil,butalsowiththerecyclingofallbyproductsfromsteelmakinglikeslag,dust,scaleandsomeothers.ThesuccessoftheseconceptscanbeseenbytheverylowemissionvaluesofBadischeStahlwerkeandalsotheprofitderivedfromtherecyclingofby-products.Otherideashavebeenworkedouttominimizenoiseemissionsandtodetectradioactivesourceswhicharecomingtogetherwiththescrapintothesteelmakingprocess.Thisproblemisgettingmoreandmoreserious.Withtheexperienceofmorethan25yearsinenvironmentalprotectioninthesteelindustry,BSEcanoffertheseconceptsandsolutionstootherminimillstoshortenimplementationtimeofenvironmentalprotectionandtoavoidexpensivemistakes.ThispapershowswhichlevelofemissionscouldbereachedwithouthavinganydisadvantageonproductivityandgivesanoverviewofvariousstandardsandpracticesinEuropeandworldwide.
