Abstract:Hydrologicalregimesinfluenceecologicalpatternsandprocessesaswellasalterratesofwetlandevapotranspiration.ThisstudyaimedtoinvestigatetheimpactofgroundwaterfluctuationonevapotranspirationofPhragmitesaustralis.SupportedbyfielddataobtainedfromtheBaiyangdianLakeinnorthernChina,thevariationsingroundwaterlevelswereexplored,andthechangesinsoilwaterandevapotranspirationofreedwereanalyzedtoinvestigatedifferentgroundwaterlevelscenariosusingHYDRUS-1Dmodel.Theresultsshowedthatsoilwatercontent,rechargedbygroundwater,remainedstableinthelowersoillayerbutvariedstronglyintheupperlayerofthesoilprofile;incomparisontoevaporation,Phragmitesaustralistranspirationcontributedsignificantlymoretotheoverallevapotranspirationrate;thehighlevelsofevapotranspirationcouldbemaintainedwhengroundwaterlevelsvarybetween1.0mand1.8m,whileitwasreducedwithanincreaseingroundwaterlevelsasaresultofwaterstressconditions.TheresultsalsoindicatedthattheevapotranspirationofPhragmitesaustraliscouldmaintainhigherevapotranspirationratesundernaturalwaterlevels.Theevapotranspiration,inotherwords,mightbethemainwaterconsumer,butitneverthelesshaslittleeffectonwaterlevelsduringwatershortages.TheevapotranspirationofPhragmitesaustralisrespondedtothechangesingroundwaterlevelscouldhelpresearchersunderstandwaterrequirementsofthewetlandsandestablishsuitablewaterlevelsforthewetlands.
